The sun is shining with a few clouds and boom out of nowhere it begins to rain cats and dogs then you hear your grandfather say it, "the devil must be beating his wife." Not sure if you've heard that saying or not, but I sure have. Of course, I know there is no Scriptural basis that supports the devil having a wife. There is scriptural basis for Jesus having a bride though. That bride is the church, and I can assure you that my Lord is not a wife beater.
Yet, that's what some seem to suggest when they say the church will go through the Tribulation. Let’s be clear: the Tribulation, specifically the 70th Week of Daniel, is a time of unprecedented judgment and divine wrath upon a Christ-rejecting world and unbelieving Israel. It is not a time meant for the Church, the blood-bought bride of Christ.
Understanding the Bride of Christ
Scripture portrays the Church as the bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-27; Revelation 19:7-9). Just as a groom prepares a place for his bride and promises to return for her, Jesus told His disciples in John 14:2-3 that He was going to prepare a place for them and would come again to receive them. This is the picture of the pre-tribulation rapture—the blessed hope spoken of in Titus 2:13.
In Ephesians 5:29, Paul writes, "For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church." Would the same Jesus who nourishes and cherishes His bride subject her to the outpouring of wrath described in Revelation 6–18?
The Purpose of the Tribulation
To rightly divide the Word, we must understand the purpose of the Tribulation, or the 70th Week of Daniel (Daniel 9:24-27). It is primarily focused on Israel, not the Church. Daniel 9:24 lists six purposes for this final seven-year period. None of which apply to the Church. The Church was not present in the first 69 weeks, and it will not be present in the 70th.
This period is referred to as "the time of Jacob's trouble" (Jeremiah 30:7), not the Church’s trouble. It is also described as a time when God's indignation and wrath will be poured out upon the earth (Isaiah 13:9-13; Zephaniah 1:14-18; Revelation 6:16-17).
Paul told the Thessalonians that God has not appointed us to wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9), but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Revelation 3:10 promises the faithful church in Philadelphia that they will be kept from the hour of trial that is coming upon the whole world. The Greek word used for "kept from" ("tereo ek") literally means to be kept out of, not preserved through.
Wrath, Not Refinement
Some claim that the Church must be refined by the fires of the Tribulation. But Scripture makes it clear that Jesus’ blood has already cleansed us from all sin (1 John 1:7). The refining fire that tests believers happens throughout our lives, not during a specific period of wrath. The Tribulation is not about sanctification, it is about judgment.
To suggest that the bride must endure the wrath of God to become worthy is to diminish the finished work of Christ on the cross. Jesus said, "It is finished" (John 19:30). Our sin debt was paid in full. The idea that the Church must suffer through the Tribulation undermines the doctrine of grace.
Jesus: The Loving Bridegroom
When Jesus returns for His bride, it will be with joy, not fury. The imagery of a Jewish wedding reflects this beautifully. The groom comes at an unexpected hour to receive his bride and take her to the place he has prepared. There is a celebration, a marriage feast, not a beatdown.
Revelation 19:7-9 describes this glorious moment: "Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready."
Contrast that with the Tribulation, where global catastrophes, demonic torment, and divine judgments devastate the earth. That is not a wedding celebration, it’s a warzone.
The Devil’s Deception
If the devil had a wife, she would likely be the harlot of Revelation 17—the false religious system that rides the beast. She is adorned in scarlet, drunk with the blood of the saints, and destined for destruction. That’s the devil’s bride. And yes, he beats her. He uses and destroys all who align with him.
In contrast, Jesus laid down His life for His bride. He serves her, washes her with the Word, and will soon receive her unto Himself. The distinction could not be more clear.
Hope in the Rapture
The rapture is our blessed hope (Titus 2:13), not a fairy tale. It’s the promise that Christ will catch away His Church before judgment falls. Just as Noah was lifted above the flood and Lot was escorted out of Sodom before destruction came, so too will the Church be removed before the wrath of God is poured out.
To conflate the Church with Israel or to place her within the judgment of the Tribulation is to confuse God's distinct programs. Israel awaits her Messiah; the Church awaits her Bridegroom.
Final Thoughts: Sound Doctrine Matters
When we confuse the Church’s role in end-times prophecy, we not only misrepresent Scripture, but we malign the character of Christ. If Jesus is coming back for a battered, bruised bride limping out of the Tribulation, then we’ve misunderstood His love and underestimated His promise.
Let’s be clear: Jesus is not a wife-beater. The 70th Week of Daniel is not about the Church. It is a final call to Israel and a judgment upon the nations. The bride of Christ will be taken home before the storm breaks. And when we see the storm clouds gathering now, we don’t fear—we look up, because our redemption draws near (Luke 21:28).
So the next time you hear thunder booming on a sunny day and someone says, "The devil must be beating his wife," smile. And remember that while the devil may beat his own, Jesus cherishes His. The Church will not face His wrath. She will be lifted up, dressed in white, and ready to meet her King.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Joe,
Thank you for writing with such clarity on the purpose of the Tribulation and the love of the Lord Jesus for His bride. If only more believers understood this, the future would be one of hope instead of fear.
Beautifully said! 💒
